Head Coach Steve Alford Secures 700th Career Win

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Steve Alford has spent a lifetime in basketball, from his days as a standout player at Indiana to becoming one of the most respected coaches in the game. On Tuesday afternoon, he reached a milestone that few achieved—his 700th career victory. Nevada's 86-71 win over Fresno State in the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Basketball Championship first round was more than just a tournament victory; it was a testament to Alford's enduring passion for the game, his relentless work ethic, and the profound impact he has had on countless players and programs throughout his coaching career.

Coaching has always been about more than wins and losses for Alford. From the moment he stepped into his first head coaching role at Manchester University in 1991, his focus has been on building programs, growing young men, and infusing the same discipline and dedication that made him a champion as a player. His voyage has taken him across the college basketball landscape, from Manchester College to Missouri State to Iowa, New Mexico to UCLA, and now to Nevada. His teams have reflected his competitive spirit and dedication to greatness at every stop.

Reaching 700 wins is an achievement that speaks to both longevity and sustained success, but it also tells the story of a coach who has continually adapted to the game. College basketball has changed dramatically since Alford first took the sidelines over three decades ago, yet his ability to evolve while preserving his core principles has allowed him to remain one of the most respected figures in the sport.

After the win, Alford recalled his coaching journey and the faith that had instructed him. "It's been an incredible journey. The Lord has blessed our family in basketball beyond belief. And a year that -- and this year, we thought we would have had this a long time ago. But we did." His words grabbed the moment's emotion—a career defined by perseverance, faith, and the sentiment that success is never given, only earned.

But beyond the X's and O's, Alford's legacy is counted in the relationships he has built. Players who have gone through his programs often speak not just of the lessons they realized on the court but of his guidance and mentorship. His influence stretches far beyond the stat sheet, shaping young men long after their playing days are over.

Tuesday's win was a milestone, but for Alford, it was just another step in a career defined by an indestructible love for the game. He has seen college basketball from every angle—playing under Bob Knight, coaching in the biggest arenas, and overseeing programs with championship aspirations. Through it all, his devotion has never tilted. As he adds another chapter to his coaching legacy, one thing is sure: basketball is better because of Steve Alford, and his impact will be felt for generations.
