RENO, Nev. - The Nevada bullpen could not hold a late lead, allowing Northern Colorado to tie it up in the eighth inning before taking an 8-7 win in 10 innings in the series opener Friday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
A one-out fielding error at second base and a walk gave Northern Colorado (5-4) a prime opportunity in the eighth inning, trailing 7-4. Brandon Sanchez's single loaded the bases, leading to Ethan Mooser's RBI single to right which cut the Wolf Pack lead to two against reliever
Dominic Desch.
Carter Monda then singled into right field, scoring Craig Kenny and Sanchez to tie it up at 7-7.
Each team would put two on with one out in its half of the ninth, but fail to score. The Bears, however, loaded the bases with one out in the 10th, and took the lead on Tony Castonguay's sacrifice fly to right.
Bears closer Jack Tuttle came on in the 10th and overcame a three-base error in right field to get his third save of the season, as second baseman Dalton Miller made a diving catch on
Jack Metcho's line drive headed up the middle.
Sean Yamaguchi hit a two-run homer and
Michael Ball had a solo shot for the Wolf Pack (4-5) Friday.
Jayce Dobie went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Closer
Ethan O'Neal took his first loss of the season, giving up the go-ahead run in the 10th despite a 2.1-inning outing in which he struck out one.
Nevada starter
Peyton Fosher went 4.2 innings, striking out five while giving up two runs on five hits.
Luke Guest got the win in relief for Northern Colorado, going two scoreless innings.
The teams play a doubleheader Saturday, with game one set for an 11:05 a.m. start.
