Â
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Nevada Softball split day one at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, falling to Baylor in extra innings, 5-4, before defeating Bethune-Cookman, 10-2.
Â
Nevada 4, Baylor 5
Haylee Engelbrecht opened the scoring with her first home run of the season, leading off the second inning. Baylor tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, walking in a run with the bases loaded after loading them with two hit-by-pitches and a walk.
Â
Nevada responded quickly, scoring
Madison Clark off a
Hannah Di Genova sacrifice fly to right field. The next at-bat,
Tatum Maytorena hit her first career home run with a line drive to right field, scoring
Aaliyah Jenkins and putting the Pack up, 4-1.
Â
Baylor began to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With a runner on first, a pinch-hit double down the left field line scored the Bears' second run. A right-field homer in the fifth brought Baylor within a run. And in the seventh inning, a single up the middle scored a base runner from third, tying the game and sending it to extra innings.
Â
The Wolf Pack could not muster anything in the top of the eighth, with their international tiebreaker runner being thrown out without a ball in play. For the Bears, two quick line drives were promising for Nevada, before back-to-back batters were hit, loading the bases. A passed ball allowed Baylor to score and walk off the game.
Â
The Wolf Pack pitching staff struggled to find its control, leading directly to two of Baylor's runs. Four walks and five hit batters headlined the Pack's outing.
Hailey McLean pitched four innings, only allowing one hit, while two runs scored.
Jessica McPartland pitched two innings, striking out two and only giving up one hit, albeit a home run.
Tess Bumiller was charged with the loss, giving up two hits and one earned run in her 1.2 innings in the circle.
Â
Bethune-Cookman 2, Nevada 10
The Wildcats got on the board first with a second-inning home run to left field.
Â
Nevada quickly turned around the game in the next inning thanks to Jenkins's third career grand slam. The Jenkins slam towered over the left field fence, scoring the Clark sisters and
Matlyn Leetch. Two batters later,
Haley Painter hit her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.
Â
Bethune-Cookman got a run back in the fourth. A fielding error by Nevada allowed the Bethune-Cookman runner to score from third.
Â
The Wolf Pack earned that run back with a
Bailie Clark single to left field with the bases loaded, scoring Engelbrecht. Di Genova gave Nevada its seventh run after she drew a walk with the bases loaded, scoring
Saige Alfaro.
Â
In the fifth inning, Engelbrecht hit her second home run of the day, going to left field both times. Despite only having seven career home runs, this is Engelbrecht's second two-home run day of her career, doing so on March 4, 2023.
Â
Nevada capped off the game with a walk-off home run by
Haley Painter, her second of the game. Her left-field drive scored
Saskia Raab, enough to put the Pack up eight in the sixth inning, enforcing the run rule. Painter's home run marked the third time in her career with multiple homers in a game.
Â
Nevada pitched tremendously in game two, using Bumiller and
Ainsley Berlingeri, each going three innings. Bumiller got the start and recorded the win for the Pack. The Redmond, Wash. native only allowed two hits without walking any batters. Berlingeri only allowed one hit in her three innings, striking out four en route to her second save of the season.
Â
Nevada returns for day two of the Mary Nutter Classic tomorrow with night games against UC Riverside at 5:30 p.m. and Hawai'i at 8 p.m. Both games will be played on Big League Dream's Des Moines field.
