Davis, Calif. - Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium
WP: Rowen Barnes (1-0)
LP: Peyton Fosher (3-5)
DAVIS, Calif. - Nevada scored twice in the ninth, and had the tying run up at the plate with one out, but
Jackson Waller scorched his line drive right at UC Davis second baseman Nick Iverson, who snagged it and stepped on second base for the double play which sealed the Wolf Pack's 7-4 loss.
The Wolf Pack (20-23) continues its five-game road week Tuesday at Sacramento State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Trailing 7-2 to start the ninth,
Derek Tenney doubled and
Josh Catacutan walked to open it up. After
Mason Hirata was thrown out after a bunt,
Michael Ball and
Jeff Bauser followed with RBI singles to put two on for Waller.
But, Iverson was shading towards the bag at second, and barely had to move in catching Waller's line drive and stepping on second to close it out.
UC Davis (22-24) went ahead for good in the bottom half of the second, taking advantage of Wolf Pack miscues to erase
Nolan Wilson's two-run homer in the top half. Jason Hanson singled and Ryan Lee walked to open the frame, then the Aggies loaded the bases as the Pack could not get an out on Mark Wolbert's bunt.
Hanson would come in on a wild pitch from Nevada starter
Peyton Fosher, and a passed ball on Wilson allowed Lee to cross with the tying run. Alex Gouveia's base hit to center plated Wolbert to make it 3-2.
The Aggies added three more in the fourth. Hanson scored on another wild pitch, this one by
Kolby Kmetko. With a runner at third, back-to-back walks to Gouveia and Iverson loaded the bases, and Tyler Howard drew a third walk to force in a second run.
Zach Garber would come in for Kmetko, and a wild pitch would bring Gouveia across with the sixth run.
Fosher would fall to 3-5 with the loss, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits with five strikeouts.
Along with Wilson's two-run homer,
Michael Ball went 2-for-4 with an RBI, his 50th of the season.
Rowen Barnes picked up his first win for the Aggies, working a scoreless third inning.
