RENO, Nev. - San Diego State hit five home runs, all within the first four innings, jumping to a big lead early then holding off Nevada, 16-11, Friday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.

Heading into the final day of the regular season, Nevada sits in fifth place in the Mountain West standings, one spot outside the potential conference tournament field. To earn a spot in the four-team field, Nevada must win Saturday's 12:05 p.m. finale against the Aztecs, and get help in the other results around the conference.

The Aztecs (17-36, 10-19 MW) had two runs within their first two batters—Finley Bates' infield single being followed by Shaun Montoya's homer to center. Two batters later, Tino Bethancourt hit a solo shot, and San Diego State was ahead 3-0.

Nevada's best chance to get back into the game came in the bottom half of the first. A one-out walk to JR Freethy was followed by a double off the wall in center from Taylor Holder, putting two in scoring position. But Aztec starter Omar Serrano got Bryce Matthews to pop up, then got Jackson Waller looking to escape.

Wolf Pack starter Casey Burfield got through the second, but ran into trouble again in the third, as Montoya led off with his second homer of the game. Irvin Weems added a two-run shot, as San Diego State put four across to go up 7-0.

Burfield fell to 4-2 with the loss, lasting just three innings and giving up seven runs on eight hits.

The Aztecs put things away with six in the fourth off of reliever Eddie Tierney, with Zane Kelly hitting a grand slam.

Serrano struck out eight and scattered five hits over seven innings, improving to 5-6 with the win.

Nevada (24-26, 15-14 MW) scored eight times in the eighth, highlighted by a grand slam from Jake Harvey. The Pack added three more in the ninth, as Billy Ham had an RBI single and Justin Acal a run-scoring double.

Along with Harvey's long ball, Nolan Wilson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs Friday. Ham drove in two while going 1-for-2.
