STOCKTON, Calif. - Easton Marks was nails on the mound and
Nolan Wilson swung the big bat Tuesday night as Nevada picked up a 7-2 midweek win at Pacific.
Marks improved to 2-1, striking out a career-high nine batters while allowing just two runs on five hits over five innings. Wilson did the damage to the Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a homer and a season-high five RBIs.
Nevada, which brought its overall record back to .500 at 11-11 with the win, returns to Peccole Park, and Mountain West play, this Thursday-Saturday, hosting Air Force in a battle of two of the four teams tied atop the conference standings at 6-3.
Wilson got Nevada on the board in the top of the first, driving in
Michael Ball and
Taylor Holder with a single into left field.
Marks took over from there, holding Pacific (5-19) scoreless over the first three innings, twice getting out of two-on, two-out situations. The Tigers did pull even in the fourth, on Jake Tandy's leadoff homer, and when Chase Graves was advanced on a balk by Marks.
But it was Wilson's bat, once again, that came through and got the decision for Marks. After Holder was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth, Wilson left no doubt, crushing a Drake Bicknell offering deep and out to left for the 4-2 Nevada lead.
The Wolf Pack added insurance with three runs in the ninth.
JR Freethy started the frame's scoring with a two-run single down the line in right, scoring
Derek Tenney and
Jackson Waller, and Wilson capped his big night by driving in Freethy with another single to left.
Freethy and
Justin Acal, each with two hits, joined Wilson among Pack batters with a multi-hit game Tuesday.
Five Nevada relievers combined to hold Pacific scoreless on just two hits over the final four innings. Pacific's best threat came in the eighth, when, down just two, the Tigers put the tying run at the plate.
Kyle Becker came on, and, after issuing a walk, got consecutive strikeouts of Jacob Weiss and Nico DeFazio to get out of the jam.
