Reno, Nev. - Don Weir Field at Peccole Park
WP: Jason Doktorczyk (3-1)
LP: David Lopez (2-1)
RENO, Nev. - Nevada starter Jason Doktorczyk faced down a New Mexico team that had scored 50 runs over its last four games, holding the Lobos to two runs and striking out five as the Pack captured the series opener, 13-2, at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
The win improved the Pack to 7-8 overall and 3-1 in Mountain West play, moving into a tie for first place early on in the conference campaign. New Mexico dropped to 3-1 in conference play and 11-7 overall.
Doktorczyk improved to 3-1 on the season, going seven innings and, for the fifth time in his five outings this season, allowing less than three earned runs. Despite the Lobos getting nine hits, only one went for extra bases.
The junior righty only ran into trouble in the second, giving up a run and having runners at the corners with one out, but he picked off Chase Weissenborn at first for the second out, then struck out Sean Stephens.
In the bottom half, Nevada's offense took over, plating five runs to open the rout. The Wolf Pack loaded the bases with no one out, then, two batters later, Jake Harvey drew a walk to force in Taylor Holder with the tying run.
Michael Ball drove in Nolan Wilson with an infield single to third, and JR Freethy legged out a potential double-play ball to score Justin Acal, and Weissenborn's throw to first went wild and into the Nevada dugout, allowing Harvey to score. Justin Pierce closed the frame's scoring with a single through the right side, bringing in Freethy to make it 5-1.
Harvey would break the game open to innings later, smashing a two-run, opposite-field homer to right-center to make it 7-1. After Ball doubled, Freethy hit his own two-run shot to right-center, effectively closing the door on any Lobo hopes at 9-1.
Both Harvey and Freethy would drive in three runs on the night, while Holder went 2-for-4 with a solo shot to right-center to lead off a three-run seventh inning. Derek Tenney drove in a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, finishing the night 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Every Nevada starter finished the night with at least one hit, as the Pack combined for 15 in the contest.
The Wolf Pack and Lobos return to action Saturday at 2:05 p.m. at Peccole Park.
