SAN DIEGO - Nevada captured its second rubber game in as many tries this season, as four Wolf Pack pitchers combined to hold San Diego State scoreless in Sunday's 6-0 win.
The Wolf Pack (6-7, 2-1 MW) wraps its stretch of 14-straight on the road to open the season Monday at 6 p.m. against UC San Diego. Nevada's conference series win sets it up well the rest of the month, as the Wolf Pack will host its next three weekend Mountain West series at Peccole Park.
Starter Peyton Fosher got his first win in a Nevada uniform, scattering six hits over 5.2 innings. Dominic Desch, Ian Hughes, and Ethan O'Neal struck out three over the final 3.1 innings to preserve the shutout.
Nevada (6-7, 2-1 MW) struck first for the third time in the series, taking a 2-0 lead in the third on Bryce Matthews' RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Nolan Wilson.
As Fosher continued rolling, the Pack added more insurance, beginning with Michael Ball's RBI single in the fourth. Ball would lead the Pack batters Sunday, going 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of RBI singles, while Matthews drove in a pair of runs and Taylor Holder went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Desch started the bullpen's stellar effort with two out in the sixth. San Diego State put two on with two out against Fosher, but Desch came on and needed just three pitches to strike out Drew Rutter to end the threat.
Desch set the Aztecs down in order in the seventh, and Hughes retired all three batters he faced in the eighth to hold the status quo. Nevada got RBI singles from Ball and Holder in the ninth to add insurance runs, before O'Neal stranded two San Diego State batters in the ninth to wrap up the win.
Xavier Cardenas fell to 1-2 on the year for San Diego State, giving up four runs on five hits with five walks over 4.2 innings.
