SAN FRANCISCO - Nevada was denied its first sweep of the 2024 campaign Sunday, falling 7-2 in the finale at San Francisco.
The Dons (4-3) scored thrice in the bottom of the eighth to build a five-run cushion, dooming the Wolf Pack's comeback hopes.
Nevada reliever Kolby Kmetko got the first out to start the eighth, but ran into trouble, issuing a walk and hitting the next two batters to load the bases. Kody Watanabe walked to force in a run, then AJ Giuliana brought in a second with a sacrifice fly to center. A Nevada error then allowed TJ Rogers to score the third run of the frame.
Nevada (4-2) had twice cut the San Francisco lead in half, earlier. Nolan Wilson's RBI single in the third made it a 2-1 game, then, after USF answered with two of its own in the bottom half, JR Freethy hit a solo shot in the fifth to make it 4-2.
Starter Peyton Fosher suffered his first loss despite a five-inning outing. He gave up four runs on seven hits with a strikeout. USF reliever Andrew Hazell got his first win by striking out six and allowing just two hits despite five walks over the final five innings. Don starter Joe Soberon went four-plus, exiting after allowing a Wilson single following Freethy's homer to lead off the fifth.
Freethy and Wilson accounted for six of the Wolf Pack's nine hits on the day, each going 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Nevada continues its road trip with its first midweek game of the season, taking on UCLA Tuesday at 5 p.m.
