SAN JOSE - Nevada's 2023 campaign ended in defeat Saturday, as the Wolf Pack fell, 6-1, at San José State.
The Pack (20-33, 10-20 MW) suffered its first sweep of the season with the loss. Nevada took a one-run lead in the top of the first on
JR Freethy's RBI groundout, but the Spartans quickly evened it up in the bottom half on Robert Hamchuk's solo homer.
San José State (27-24, 18-11 MW) broke it open with five runs in the third against Nevada starter
Peyton Stumbo. Hamchuk started it with a one-out double, followed by RBI doubles from Theo Hardy and Charles McAdoo to make it 3-1.
Hunter Dorraugh followed with an RBI single before a Dalton Bowling double put runners at second and third. Dorraugh would score on a wild pitch before Bowling came across on a Wolf Pack error.
That would wrap the scoring in the contest. Aaron Eden improved to 2-4 for San José State, holding the Pack to a run on four hits over five innings.
Jacob Biesterfeld was a bright spot for Nevada Saturday, striking out four over two scoreless innings in relief. He highlighted a combined effort of six Nevada relievers holding the Spartans scoreless over the final 5.2 innings. Stumbo gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits, taking the loss.
Mason Hirata and
Matt Clayton each had a double for Nevada, with Hirata going 2-for-4 on the day and Clayton scoring the Pack's lone run.
