LAS VEGAS - Three Nevada errors led to a three-run second inning for UNLV in Thursday's series opener, and the Wolf Pack could not recover in a 7-1 loss.
That pivotal second inning started with Edarian Williams reaching on an error by
Mason Hirata at shortstop. After a Kade Higgins single, two more Nevada errors, first on an errant throw on a fielder's choice and next on starter
Peyton Stumbo on Braden Murphy's grounder, allowed Williams to score the game's opening run.
With the bases loaded and none out, Paul Myro IV drove in two with a double to center to put the Rebels up 3-0. Myro, who added an RBI single in UNLV's two-run eighth, went 2-for-3 with four runs driven in Thursday.
Higgins' second hit of the game, a solo shot, put UNLV up 4-0 in the fourth. Nevada (12-16, 3-9 MW) got on the board in the top of the fifth, as
Mason Hirata's triple to right-center drove in
Jeff Bauser. But UNLV starter Noah Carbajal stranded Hirata at third by striking out
Henry Strmecki and
Matt Clayton.
Carbajal went seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball to pick up his first win. For the Pack, Stumbo gave up just two earned runs of UNLV's five, allowing just five hits and striking out two.
The teams return to action Friday night at 6:05 p.m., with Saturday's finale set for 12:05 p.m.
