RENO, Nev. - Four Nevada errors in the late innings led to five Sacramento State runs, as the Wolf Pack had a slim lead erased and fell, 12-8, to the Hornets Tuesday night at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
Nevada (16-22) capitalized on two Hornet errors in the first to take a 5-1 lead, and led 8-7 after
Henry Strmecki's two-run double highlighted a three-run fourth.
But in the top of the sixth, Sacramento State (21-20) got extra chances, first when
Jackson Waller muffed a throw at second that would have resulted in a force out, then again with a bouncer got past
Dawson Martin at first. Wolf Pack reliever
Morgan White loaded the bases after Waller's error by hitting Martin Vincelli-Simard, then the Hornets got a run on JP Smith's double-play ball, and another on Martin's miscue to go up 9-8.
Wehiwa Aloy reached on a three-base error by
Nolan Wilson in right to open the seventh, and came in on a wild pitch from
Dorsey Chatham. Aloy would come around on Vincelli-Simard's double to left, making it 11-8.
White would take the loss, his third of the season, despite giving up two unearned runs and no hits over an inning of work.
Nevada's bats were silenced after its three-run fourth. Xavier Richards, who got his first win of the season, gave up just one hit over scoreless fifth and sixth innings, and three more Hornet relievers kept the Pack off the board over the final three frames.
Wilson and
Jesse Pierce had three hits apiece to lead the Pack, with Wilson doubling twice. Strmecki had two RBIs on his fourth-inning double, and
Josh Catacutan highlighted the five-run first with an opposite-field, two-run single.
Vincelli-Simard led Sacramento State with two RBIs in a 3-for-4 night, while Aloy scored three runs.
Tuesday's contest opened Nevada's nine-game home stand, and the Pack will continue it this weekend, hosting Long Beach State and Grand Canyon for four games. The Pack's first game of the weekend will be Friday night at 6:35 p.m. against Long Beach State.
