RENO, Nev. - Nevada was denied a second-straight walk-off victory over UNLV Sunday, as the Rebels scored four times in the top of the 11th to take the series with a 9-5 decision at Greater Nevada Field.
Rylan Charles hit a two-out, two-run homer to right off of Wolf Pack reliever
Morgan White to put UNLV ahead, 7-5, in the 11th. Two batters later, Jacob Sharp added a two-run shot of his own to put it out of reach.
White had gone 2.2 innings of scoreless relief up until Charles' homer, and fell to 1-2 with the loss.
UNLV (7-11, 3-3 MW) used two four-run innings to take the lead Sunday. Nevada led 3-1 and starter
Casey Burfield was working well through four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. There, the long ball hurt Nevada for the first time on the day, as Edarian Williams followed Sharp's RBI single with a three-run shot to left-center, putting the Rebels in front, 5-3.
Nevada (10-10, 2-4 MW) got RBI singles from
Matt Clayton and
Derek Tenney in the first to take a 2-0 lead, then answered UNLV's run in the top of the second with one in the bottom half to maintain the two-run advantage.
That third run came in behind
Mason Hirata's RBI double, starting a day for the Pack shortstop in which he went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.
The Pack fought back to tie things up after going down 5-3. Hirata tied it up in the sixth with a second RBI double, an inning after Clayton's sacrifice fly brought Nevada to within 5-4.
Casey Burfield went five innings for Nevada, giving up five runs on five hits.
Peyton Stumbo was solid out of the bullpen, throwing three innings of one-hit ball and striking out four.
UNLV reliever Jordan Hanson earned the win, pitching the final six innings and allowing just a run on four hits.
Nevada travels to San Francisco for a Tuesday afternoon contest, set for 2 p.m., before returning home for a three-game set against New Mexico.
