ABILENE, Texas - Seth Sweet-Chick's three-run homer put Nevada on top in the eighth inning, and two insurance runs in the ninth made the difference Sunday, as the Pack got its first win of 2023, 9-7 at Abilene Christian.
Nevada (1-2) will go for the series split Monday, with first pitch in the finale set for 10:05 a.m. PT.
The Pack flipped the script from the first two contests, during which it lost an early lead and fell short in a rally. Sunday, Nevada again lost an early lead, but this time roared back with five runs over the final two innings.
After Abilene Christian (2-1) got one in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead, the Wolf Pack needed just three at-bats to get back in front. Jaxon Woodhouse led off the top of the eighth with a walk, and went to third on Jeff Bauser's single. That set up Sweet-Chick, who took a 1-0 pitch from Adam Stephenson deep to give Nevada a 7-5 lead.
The Pack got insurance in the ninth, upping its lead to 9-5. After loading the bases with none out, Nevada got a Woodhouse sacrifice fly for the first run of the frame, followed by an RBI single from Bauser.
The insurance turned out to be the difference, as Abilene Christian got solo shots from Logan Britt and Miller Ladusau in the bottom half of the ninth, and put the tying run at the plate before Dillon Holliday struck out Jake Skaggs to seal the win.
Dorsey Chatham got the win in relief for Nevada, coming in to get the final out of the seventh then throwing a scoreless eighth. Stephenson, who faced the first two batters of the Wolf Pack eighth, and exited before getting an out, took the loss.
Derek Tenney hit his second homer in as many days for Nevada, with his three-run shot in the third giving the Pack a 4-1 lead. It followed an RBI double from Nolan Wilson, who continued his strong opening weekend with a 1-for-3 performance. Bauser led the Pack with three hits on the day.
The early lead was erased in the bottom of the fourth, as Abilene Christian got an RBI double from Skaggs and a two-run homer from Crew Parke to tie it up off of Pack starter Casey Burfield. Morgan White came on for Burfield, getting the final out of the inning, starting a strong relief effort in which he gave up just one hit and struck out four over 2.1 innings.
