Nevada Athletics mourns passing of Hall of Famer Tom Duncan

RENO, Nev. – Nevada Athletics is saddened to learn of the passing of former Wolf Pack Men's Golf head coach and 2021 Hall of Fame inductee Tom Duncan.

Duncan served as Nevada's men's golf head coach from 1994-2004, guiding the Pack to a No. 1 national ranking in 2000, four NCAA Regionals (1996, 1998, 2001 & 2002) and 10 tournament titles. Over his tenure, Duncan coached Wolf Pack golfers Justin Peters and Rich Barcelo to All-America honors and guided a total of 13 all-conference selections. His 1997-98 team finished in the top 10 of 10 of its 11 tournaments that season and saw three players capture medalist honors, a feat unmatched in the country that season.

He twice took home a conference's top coaching honor, being voted the 1997 Big West Conference Coach of the Year and the 2002 WAC Coach of the Year.

"Tom Duncan was a pillar in Nevada Athletics and the golf community in Northern Nevada, and our hearts go out to his family. Tom was a great baseball player for the Wolf Pack and then came back to his alma mater to become one of the best coaches in school history," said Senior Associate Athletics Director and Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame chair Rhonda Lundin Bennett. "One of my favorite Wolf Pack memories was seeing the smile on his face when he was inducted into the Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame last fall. I am so glad he had the opportunity to be recognized and celebrated for all of his achievements. Tom had the biggest heart and was always willing to help anyone who asked. He will be sorely missed in Nevada Athletics and throughout our community."

Duncan started his Wolf Pack career as a student-athlete, playing three seasons with the Nevada baseball team as a catcher and third baseman after transferring from Arizona State. He served as team captain for two years. He did play-by-play for Nevada Baseball broadcasts and remained a Wolf Pack season ticketholder and donor for many years.

Duncan remained deeply connected to the northern Nevada community after his tenure as the Wolf Pack's head coach, founding Duncan Golf Management. He purchased numerous golf courses in the area, including Wolf Run Golf Course, and continued to refurbish and run courses throughout the community for many years. He also started a junior golf program and worked to grow the game and keep golf prices affordable for the Reno-Sparks community.

"Tom Duncan was one of the best coaches and people that I ever worked with here at Nevada. He was a heck of a golf coach, and his family is awesome," said Nevada head football coach Ken Wilson. "Some of my best memories as a young administrator and coach were talking to Tommy Duncan early in the morning and getting a life perspective from him. Everybody in Wolf Pack Athletics is going to miss him."
