MELISSA, Texas -Â Strong pitching combined with opportunistic base-running carried Nevada to a 2-1 victory over Abilene Christian to close the 2022 Tracy Beard Classic, Sunday.
All five of the Pack's games at this weekend's event were decided by a run, with Nevada (2-8) going 2-3.
Sophomore
Tyra Clary got the starting call, and delivered five innings of one-hit ball, allowing just one run while striking out eight Wildcat batters. Freshman
Ellie Garcia came on in the sixth, and picked up the win after Abilene Christian (5-6) tied it up before the Pack retook the lead in the bottom half of the frame.
Nevada reclaimed the lead thanks to heads-up baserunning from freshman
Alycia Coats. Coats tripled on a bloop into short right-center which caromed into foul territory on a futile diving attempt from the Wildcat centerfielder Mercedes Eichelberger. A routine throw back into the infield went uncaught, and Coats alertly sprinted home for the go-ahead run.
Garcia, after giving up a game-tying, two-out single to Shaylee Alani in the top half of the sixth, got out of a two-on, two-out situation in the seventh, getting Paige Harris to fly out to center for the final out. The win evened Garcia's record to 2-2.
Coats, who had one of the Pack's four hits on the day, was also responsible for the Pack's first run of the game. She was hit by a pitch to lead off the second, before being lifted for pinch-runner
Preslie Hewitt. A single from
Abby Larsen and a
Tatum Maytorena sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out, and, a batter later, Hewitt came across on a wild pitch from Wildcat starter Lauren Schiek.
Nevada returns to the road next weekend, traveling to St. George, Utah, for five games at the Dixie Classic. The weekend begins Thursday, Feb. 24, as the Pack faces Weber State at 11 a.m. PT (12 p.m. local).
