Nevada captures 2020-21 Silver State Series

RENO, Nev. – Nevada got the 2020-21 athletic campaign off to a strong start against in-state rival UNLV by recapturing the Fremont Cannon in October, and put the cap on a memorable year by defeating the Rebels in the annual Silver State Series presented by IBEW Local 401 and Nevada Donor Network.

Nevada has now captured the series in 2016-17 and 2020-21.

A spring surge from the Wolf Pack, in which victories in the head-to-head competition in men's and women's golf, softball, and baseball secured 12 points, gave Nevada an insurmountable 24-12 lead en route to taking the series by a 24-21 final score.

Nevada Football got it rolling at the start, defeating UNLV, 37-19, on Halloween to not only secure three points in the series, but also the famed Fremont Cannon. A series sweep of UNLV by Nevada Men's Basketball, along with a well-earned series split by the Wolf Pack women's hoopsters, got the Pack out to an early six-point lead at 7.5-1.5.

The Wolf Pack's higher finish at the Mountain West Women's Cross Country Championships, along with a critical 2-1 victory by Nevada Women's Soccer April 9 at Mackay Stadium, which earned a split of that season series, kept Nevada in front ahead of the home stretch.

UNLV briefly took a 15-12 lead in the series behind victories in men's and women's tennis, but the Pack quickly turned it around, beginning with higher finishes at both the Mountain West Men's and Women's Golf Championship events.

Nevada clinched the series win the weekend of May 8-9, as both softball and baseball posted a three-game series sweep of their Rebel counterparts in Reno.

UNLV would add the final six points by capturing the higher finish at the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and via the Academic Progress Rate release (multi-year scores).
