Nevada earns 11th consecutive MW win after sweep at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – The Nevada baseball team earned its 11th consecutive Mountain West win on Sunday after downing Fresno State, 3-1, to take the three game series.

The Wolf Pack (21-17, 18-9 MW) has won 11 out of its last 12 games overall and 11 in a row in league play, including three consecutive series sweeps. After jumping into the top spot in the conference standings yesterday, today's victory increases Nevada's lead, although with an off weekend approaching the team will need to wait until the final weekend of May to potentially clinch the regular season championship.

In Sunday's game the Wolf Pack scored all three of its runs within the first two innings, but that was all Nevada needed to score the victory. The Pack scored in the top of the first all series long, and Sunday was no different. A hit batter to lead off the game, followed by singles from Dario Gomez and Dillan Shrum loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout for the game's first out, Landon Wallace stepped in a delivered a sacrifice fly to center that scored Bosetti to get Nevada on the board.

Nevada used some two-out magic to plate its other two runs of the game in the top of the second. Anthony Flores led off the inning by reaching on an error by the Fresno State third baseman, and with two outs moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Bosetti came to the plate and knocked in Flores with an RBI single to center and later scored himself on a long Shrum single that nearly left the ballpark. Gomez attempted to score on the Shrum single as well, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The Wolf Pack offense was held scoreless the remaining seven innings, but it did not matter as the Bulldogs could only get one run across the entire game. Fresno State scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth, an unearned run as that runner was put into scoring position on the Pack's only error of the series. For Nevada, the one run scored by Fresno State marks a season-low.

Freshman Cam Walty pitched another gem as he earned his fourth win of the season, tossing 7.0 innings and allowing just the one unearned run on five hits. In Walty's last two starts he has an ERA of 1.29 and has given up just nine hits in 14.0 innings of work. Tyler Cochran secured his seventh save of the season as he pitched the final two innings and struck out three of the eight batters he faced. In the bottom of the ninth the Bulldogs brought the winning run to the plate but Cochran struck him out to seal the victory.
