AUSTIN, Texas – For the second straight night a late-game comeback bid fell just short for the Nevada baseball team against No. 3 Texas, losing 6-5 Wednesday evening.
The Longhorns (27-8) were cruising through the first third of the ball game, getting 10 straight outs before
Joshua Zamora ripped a double down the left field line for the Wolf Pack's first hit of the contest. Later in the inning,
Dillan Shrum collected another double for Nevada (10-15) which scored
Dario Gomez to get the Pack on the board in the fourth. Texas had been leading 2-0 to that point after opening the scoring in the second on a two-run home run, but had that lead cut in half.
Texas added three more runs between the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-1 lead into the eighth, where Nevada did real damage.
Marco Valenzuela led off the top of the eighth with a two-base hit down the left field line and was followed by a drawn walk from
Jacob Stinson. Zamora stepped in and loaded the bases with no outs on a single that squeezed through the right side of the infield. Nevada got its first run of the frame on the next play as Gomez singled to right, which plated Valenzuela and kept the bases loaded. Shrum came up clutch for the Pack once again as he notched his second double of the game, which scored two runs to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Longhorns. Still with no outs in the inning,
Matt Clayton drew a walk to load the bases once more. The next batter,
Tyler Bosetti, hit into an infield double play but in the process scored Gomez from third to tie the game. Texas was able to get the final out of the inning and strand the final Pack base runner at third but the game had been knotted up at 5-5.
Unfortunately for Nevada the tie game did not last long as the Longhorns led off their portion of the eighth with a double and brought that runner in to score for what proved to be the game-winning run. Trailing by one in the ninth, the Wolf Pack was set down in order to seal the victory for the Longhorns, their 10
th win in a row.
The Pack saw four pitchers enter the game, with the loss saddled to
Tyler Cochran, who pitched the bottom of the eighth inning. Offensively Zamora and Shrum each tallied a three-hit game and combined for six of the Pack's nine hits.
Nevada will be back in action next weekend, April 24-25, as it heads to Colorado Springs, Colo. to face Air Force in Mountain West play.
