Sherfield leads Pack to sweep of Lobos

LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomore guard Grant Sherfield scored 19 of his career-high 28 points in the second half, and seven of the Pack's final nine, to lead Nevada to an 84-74 victory and series sweep of New Mexico.

Sherfield went 3-for-4 from deep and a perfect 8-for-8 from the line over the final 20 minutes, highlighting a blazing second half for Nevada. The Pack went 9-for-12 from behind the arc in the second half, hitting a season-high 13 for the game, and shot 56.0 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes, including hitting its final five attempts.

For the night, Sherfield was also 11-for-12 from the line and passed out eight assists.

The final Pack blitz of the night began with four-and-a-half minutes to play, answering a 10-0 New Mexico run with a game-ending 15-4 run of its own. The Lobos capped their run with Bayron Matos' layup to take a 70-69 lead with 4:50 to play, and the momentum seemed to be all theirs.

But Desmond Cambridge, Jr., who finished the night with 15 points, drilled two triples in a row, each assisted by Sherfield, to get the Pack back in front at 75-70. The Nevada defense forced a Lobo turnover on the ensuing possession, which Sherfield capitalized on for a layup, and yet another New Mexico turnover led to Sherfield's fifth 3-pointer of the night, capping an 11-point outburst and putting the Pack in front, 80-71, with just over two minutes to go.

Sherfield would add two free throws seconds later, and Tre Coleman's layup with 42 seconds to go provided the final points of the night. The Pack defense, meanwhile, forced three Lobo turnovers and held New Mexico to just one field goal over its final five attempts to seal the victory.

It capped a wild second half which featured massive swings and the teams alternating runs. Nevada stretched its 39-36 halftime lead to nine at 46-37 on Zane Meeks' layup just over two minutes into the half, but the Pack would miss its next four attempts as New Mexico caught fire, riding three triples to a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to take the 51-46 lead.

Kane Milling, who hit a career-best four triples on the night, would bring the Pack back with consecutive corner 3-pointers.

Keith McGee and Makuach Maluach led the Lobos Saturday with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Nevada heads back out on the road next week, visiting San Diego State for a pair. The series opener is set for a 7 p.m. tip Thursday, Jan. 9 at Viejas Arena, with the finale scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9. Both games will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
