Pack’s 15 hits not enough as it falls 14-8 at Air Force

Clayton tallies four hits

RENO, Nev. – Despite outhitting Air Force (19-22, 9-12 MW) 15-14, Nevada (23-20, 10-13 MW) fell for the second day in a row to the Falcons 14-8. Matt Clayton led the Wolf Pack with a career day, finishing 4-for-4 with two RBI and a double.

Tomorrow's series finale against the Falcons is slated for 11 a.m. PT. John Ramey will have the call on 94.1 FM/1450 AM as well as a live broadcast on the Mountain West Network.

The back-and-forth affair between the two conference foes began in the first inning, as Clayton's first hit of the day scored Jaylon McLaughlin to give the Pack the first lead of the day. Conor Allard also tallied an RBI in the first frame to put Nevada ahead 2-0 after one inning.

That lead was increased to 3-0 thanks to a Joshua Zamora sacrifice fly in the second inning that brought Keaton Smith home. Air Force rallied back and began the bottom of the second with a two-run bomb and eventually took a 4-3 lead after two.

Nevada came back and tied the game in the third thanks to a Tyler Bosetti sacrifice fly, just for the Falcons to jump out to another one-run lead in the third thanks to an RBI-single.

The Pack put up three runs in the fourth, led off by Zamora's second RBI of the day. Clayton recorded his third hit on an RBI-double that frame to score McLaughlin again and Nevada led 7-5 after four frames.

Both teams would be held scoreless for the next two frames, thanks in large part to Shane Gustafson coming in for Nevada and retiring seven straight Falcons. Keaton Smith continued his hot streak by doubling to score Tyler Bosetti and give the Pack an 8-5 lead.

However, the Falcons caught fire in the seven with a two-run bomb that brought it within one. After a go-ahead two-run shot by Nic Ready in the bottom of the eighth, Air Force scored five more runs and ended its seven-run eighth inning with a 14-8 lead.

Nevada will be back in action tomorrow to try and take the series finale from the Falcons and even the all-time series, now trailing 17-16.
