Late runs not enough as Nevada drops second contest at UNLV

Series finale set for 1:05 p.m. tomorrow

Reno, Nev. – Junior Dillan Shrum homered for the second time in as many days on Saturday night, but Nevada (11-10, 3-5 MW) dropped its second consecutive game at UNLV (14-10, 4-4 MW) by a score of 8-5. Sophomore Tyler Bosetti hit his second home run of the season, smacking a two-run bomb in the ninth inning.

The series finale between the intrastate rivals will take place tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. John Ramey will have the call on 94.1 FM/1450 AM, with the contest also available via live stream on the Mountain West Network.

Owen Sharts (2-4) suffered the loss for Nevada in his sixth consecutive start for the Wolf Pack. Senior Weston Hatten was the lone member of the Pack to record multiple hits, as he tallied three on the night.

UNLV's Max Smith had a big day for the Rebels, blasting a solo shot in the second inning and a three-run bomb in his next at bat in the third inning to give the Rebels a 4-0 lead. Hatten's first hit of the day in the fourth was also the first on the night for the Pack, an RBI-single that scored Dillan Shrum from third to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Rebel's had another big inning in the fifth, plating three more runs to jump out to a 7-1 advantage. Josh Congress came in relief of Sharts and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings.

Shrum blasted his second homer of the series in the eighth inning to cut the UNLV lead down to 7-3. The Rebels responded by getting one of those runs back in the eighth on a wild pitch. Nevada then sent in Dalton Gomez in relief, who recorded the final two outs of the inning in the form of two strikeouts.

Nevada fought back in the ninth frame, as Hatten led off with a leadoff double and Bosetti drilled his second home run of the season to cut UNLV's lead to 8-5, but the next three Pack batters went down to end the game.

Following tomorrow's contest, Nevada will come home for five games next week at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park. Tickets for each contest are available online or by calling (775) 348-PACK.
