Nevada falls 3-1 in final contest against Washington State

At Grand Canyon on Wednesday

Reno, Nev. – In the closest contest of the three-game series, Nevada (7-3) fell to Washington State (4-7) at home on Saturday by a score of 3-1. The Wolf Pack will be back in action on Wednesday at Grand Canyon with John Ramey on the call for Nevada on 94.1 FM/1450 AM.

Freshman Owen Sharts (2-1) suffered his first collegiate loss after allowing two runs in six innings of work. The Cougars' Hayden Rosenkrantz (1-1) earned his first win of 2019 after tossing five shutout innings.

The Pack's still off to its best start since 2015 with a 7-3 record, despite losing the series to the Cougars. Redshirt sophomore Otis Statum Jr. led Nevada with a .500 batting average over the weekend, while sophomore Joshua Zamora totaled five RBI.

Both teams only mustered one hit through the first three frames, but two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Cougars in the fourth inning. WSU took a 2-0 lead after a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly scored two runs.

Nevada left two runners on base in consecutive innings, as it was unable to score a run in the fourth or fifth. Despite two runs being scored in the fourth, Sharts retired eight straight batters before his night ended after six innings.

Washington State added one unearned run in the seventh inning after a fielding error by Joshua Zamora, but the sophomore came back with an RBI single of his own in the bottom of the frame. Zamora scored Wyatt Tilley from second base to eliminate the shutout and get the Pack on the board.

Cooper Powell pitched the final 1.1 innings of the ballgame, only allowing one hit. Trailing by two in the bottom of the ninth, freshman Nick Seamons led off the inning with a double to get into scoring position but was later tagged out on a fielder's choice and the Cougars pulled out the 3-1 victory.

Following its contest against the Lopes, Nevada will open up Mountain West play next weekend at San Diego State. Each contest will be broadcast on 94.1 FM/1450 AM.
