Pack splits day one of Libby Matson Tournament

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Nevada softball team split day one of the Libby Matson Tournament on the campus of Pacific and move to 4-5 on the season. The Pack fell to Oregon State , 5-1 in the morning game and beat California Baptist, 6-2 in the mid-afternoon game.

The team combined for 12 hits with seven RBI and drew six walks from the plate. Senior Alyssa Mendez started the second game and went 2-3 with one run and one RBI but was 3-4 on the day and shared the team high two RBI with Lauren Gutierrez. Dallas Millwood and Emma Covert came in as pinch hitters against Oregon State but both waited until the CBU game to tally their first doubles on the year.

In the circle, Julia Jensen pitched nine complete innings over the two games with a start against CBU and racked up nine strikeouts with four earned runs. Freshman Kendall Fritz started against Oregon State and spent five innings in the circle with two strikeouts and only three earned runs.

Oregon State 5, Nevada 1

The Beavers scored first with a single to the left side and was driven home on a double to right. That was the only action in the game until the fifth inning. Both teams just exchanged a couple singles here and there but no one was threatening until in the top of the fifth when Oregon State launched a two-run home run over the right field wall to put them up 3-0.

Oregon State added two more in the top of the sixth with another two-run home run to give them a 5-0 lead headed into the bottom. Nevada responded with four pinch hitters in a row to string together a run but were left stranded after a strikeout ended the inning.

Nevada 6, CBU 2

The second game on the day was a bit more exciting as the Pack held CBU scoreless in the first inning before putting two runs up themselves in the bottom of the first. Sierra Mello singled and landed at second after a Lancer error; she was then moved to third on a sac bunt from Sadaria McAlister and brought home after Millwood doubled. Kenzi Goins was the second run that came home after drawing a walk from Springstead, thanks to Millwood.

CBU turned around in the second inning and hit two solo home runs over the right field fence to tie it up 2-2 but Nevada responded with a run off its own in the bottom.

The score stayed 3-2, in favor of the Pack until the bottom of the sixth when the Lancers committed two fielding errors to put Ashley Salausa and Goins on base with no outs. Mendez singled back to the pitcher and Salausa scored to give Nevada a 4-2 lead with two outs. Covert drew a walk to load the bases when Haley Burda singled to bring Goins home. The final run of the inning was a drawn walk from Gutierrez so Mendez could cross home plate and make it 6-2. A bases loaded ground out ended the inning and the game.

The Pack play two more tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. PT rematch with California Baptist before taking on host team Pacific at 1:15 p.m. PT. 37718
