RENO, Nev. -- The Nevada football team landed a targeted class of 13 high school prospects on the first day of the early signing period on Wednesday.
Third-year head coach
Jay Norvell lauded the balanced class which, to date, features seven offensive players, five defensive players, and a punter. In his fourth overall signing class, Nevada identified offensive line, linebacker and running back as areas of need, and the Pack delivered in those areas on Wednesday.
Nevada signed four offensive linemen and the average size is 6-4½ and 305 pounds of the future Union members.Â
"One of the things about these offensive linemen that I really like is that we need to get bigger," Norvell said. "And in our sport, bigger is better. These kids are more developed, more physical. They are very good players."
At running back, the Pack signed Avery Morrow out of Garfield High School in Seattle and Norvell noted the high school prospect's size (6-0, 205) and athleticism.
Continuing on the areas of need, the Pack has signed three linebackers so far: Davion Blackwell (Folsom, Calif.); Peter Montini (Pleasanton, Calif.); and Tongiaki "Naki" Matiealona (Compton, Calif.).
The class of 2020, so far, is made up of 13 prospects from six states. Per usual, Nevada landed the most recruits from California, with nine coming in on the first day. The Pack signed a player from each of the following states: Oregon, Washington, Nebraska and Georgia.
All 13 of the signees so far are from the high school ranks. Two of the signees – Mateialona and receiver Isaac Jernagin – intend to graduate early and join the Pack in the spring semester and will be eligible to participate in spring drills.
"And, if you care, we got 12 three-stars and one two-stars," Norvell said.
With five scholarships remaining, Norvell identified defensive backs, quarterback, and running back as the likely area of focus.
The early signing period runs through Friday, Dec. 20. The regular signing period begins Feb. 5, 2010.
