RENO, Nev. – In its 2018 home opener at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park, Nevada (6-6, 3-1 MW) came alive offensively to knock off Mountain West foe San Jose State (6-7, 0-3) on Friday afternoon. Mark Nowaczewski (2-1) pitched 7.1 innings and picked up his second win of the season.
In their first career game at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park, junior outfielder Weston Hatten and sophomore second baseman Daniel Perry each homered. Hatten was a triple away from hitting for the cycle after going 3-5 at the plate.
Senior outfielder Mike Echavia got the scoring started for the Wolf Pack early on, hitting a double in the bottom of the first inning. Fellow senior outfielder Grant Fennell raced from first base all the way home to score the opening run of the day.
In the third frame, the Spartans came right back and tied the game on an RBI single. Nevada broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth beginning with Hatten's two-run home run. With the bases loaded, Perry singled to score one run and redshirt freshman Conor Allard was walked with the bases still juiced to make the game 5-1. The Pack would close the inning up 6-1 after a wild pitch plated one more.
Nowaczewski caught fire in the middle of the day, retiring nine straight Spartans from the third frame to the sixth. Nevada would all but seal the deal in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring another five runs beginning with Perry's solo shot to left. The Pack was assisted by three Spartan errors in the inning as well.
After Nowaczewski left with one out in the top of the eighth, senior Keone Cabinian came in and shut the door on the Spartans. With a runner on second, Cabinian got the final two outs of the inning and shutout the Spartans in the ninth to end the game.
Nevada will be back to try and take its second conference series of the season when it battles SJSU tomorrow at 1 p.m. A livestream will be available on NevadaWolfPack.Tv and audio can be heard on NBC Sports Radio 94.1 FM / 1450 AM.
