ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Nevada (4-4, 1-0 MW) baseball team produced two big offensive innings and got outstanding pitching out of the bullpen to down New Mexico (4-4-1, 0-1 MW) 9-5 in the Mountain West opener for both schools. With the victory the Wolf Pack evened its mark at 4-4 on the season while the Lobos dropped to 4-4-1.
Game two of the series is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
Mark Nowaczewski (1-1) will take the mound for the Pack and Robert Gasser (1-0) is scheduled to pitch for the Lobos. The game can be heard NBC Sports Radio 94.1FM/1450 AM with Doug Greenwald calling the action. Online audio is available at

Nevada scored a run in the top of the first but UNM took the lead with a pair in the bottom half of the inning. The Pack's first big inning of the night came in the top of the third scoring five runs three hits. Nevada second baseman
Daniel Perry doubled home the first two runs of the inning and third baseman
Joshua Zamora delivered a big blow with a bases clearing double to put the Pack back in front to stay 6-2.
The Lobos scored twice in the bottom of the third to make the score 6-4 where it stayed until the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded pincher hitter
Kaleb Foster was hit by pitch to score the first of three in the top of the frame. First baseman
Conor Allard followed with a two-out double that scored two and the Pack led 9-4. UNM score and unearned run in the top of the eighth to make the final score 9-5.
After Nevada starter
Weston Hatten allowed four runs, three earned in 2.2 innings on the mound the bullpen took control on the mound. Lefty
Cooper Powell tossed four no hit innings of relief.
Austin Dick and
Matt Young each followed with an inning. Dick allowed and unearned run on a pair of hits in his inning on the mound.
In the bottom of the ninth Young walked the leadoff batter and surrendered a single before starting a 1-4 double play. After another walk, freshman
Jake Jackson struck out pinch hitter Robby Campillo to end the game, as he earned his first collegiate save.
Powell (1-1) earned the win in relief and Jackson (1) picked up the save. UNM starter Justin Slaten (1-2) was tagged with the loss allowing six runs, one earned.
Perry (2-for-4,R,2RBI), Grand Fennell (2-for-5,R,RBI) and Hatten (2-for-5,2R) led the Pack with two hits each. Zamora drove in three runs and Perry two in the victory.
UNM was led by Chris Dunn who drove in three runs and collected a game-high three hits.
