IRVINE, Calif. – In its season opener, the Nevada baseball team (0-1) fell on the road at UC Irvine (1-0) on Friday night by a score of 4-0. The Wolf Pack accumulated six hits on the night, including a team-high two from
Kaleb Foster.
Nevada's ace
Mark Nowaczewski (0-1) suffered the loss for the Pack, throwing 104 pitches through six innings. The senior allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out three Anteaters. UCI's Andre Pallante (1-0) earned his first win of the season after tossing 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts and zero earned runs allowed.
The first two innings started similarly for both teams, as neither were able to get much offense going. Senior
Cole Krzmarzick saved an extra-base hit in the bottom of the second after jumping into the fence to make a phenomenal defensive play.
Three of UCI's four runs came in the third inning. With two outs, Nick Anderson singled to score the first run of the game. Cole Kreuter stepped up to the plate immediately after and drove in two more with a double to make the score 3-0.
Mike Echavia, one of Nevada's best hitters from 2017, would give the team a spark by hitting a double to get into scoring position in the fourth inning. The Pack was unable to bring the senior home, as he was one of six runners left on base on Friday night.
Nevada had another opportunity to score its first run of the season in the fifth when Foster smacked a double for his second hit of the night. The junior eventually made it to third base on a wild pitch, but was stranded there by three consecutive strikeouts by the Pack.
Nowaczewski did not allow anyone to reach base through the fourth and fifth innings, and his night ended after another shutout inning in the sixth.
Keone Cabinian would come in to pitch the seventh, but allowed UCI's fourth run of the game, all of which came with two outs.
Freshman
Jordan Jackson saw his first collegiate action in the eighth inning, shutting down the Anteaters with three straight outs after walking Anderson. Nevada would go down in order in the ninth to end the game with a 4-0 loss.
Foster leads the Pack with a .500 batting average and .750 slugging percentage heading into Nevada's rematch with UCI. First pitch will commence tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. Audio will only be available
online for tomorrow's game.
