EL PASO, Texas – The 13
th ranked University of Nevada rifle team set the school record shooting 4677 in the victory at No. 17 UTEP. The Wolf Pack outscored the Miners 4677-4581 in the Patriot Rifle Conference match today. The previous record of 4669 came last season on Nov. 12 at the Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
Nevada hosts Ohio State next weekend with the smallbore being shot on Saturday and the air rifle Sunday.
Nevada dominated the Miners posting the top five scores in smallbore, top four in air rifle and top five aggregate scores that combines the two events.
Junior
Mitchell Van Patten led the way with the top scores in all three events. Van Patten shot 591 in air rifle which was equaled by senior teammate
Justin Nissen, but earned the win based on the tiebreaker. His 585 in smallbore was five better than Nissen (580) who finished second. Once again he edged Nissen by five points in the aggregate with his 1176 compared to 1171.
Senior
Emily Capaul was third in air rifle with a 589 and her 1165 aggregate also earned her third. In smallbore she shot 576 to place fourth.
Sophomore
Rachel Benesh earned a pair of fouth place finishes with a 588 in air rifle and 1164 aggregate score. Benesh shot 576 in smallbore to tie Capaul but lost the tiebreaker to finish fifth.
In the smallbore competition sophomore
Eli Larimer placed third with a 577. Larimer's 1162 aggregate score ranked fifth and his 585 in air rifle was good for sixth.
