AUSTIN, Texas - Running a collegiate personal record and breaking the Nevada record, senior Emily Myers extended her Wolf Pack track career Friday night, qualifying for the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Ore. with a 3000 meter steeplechase time of 10:14.28.
The Cabot, Ark. native now holds a total of six school records across cross country and indoor and outdoor track. Her time of 10:14.28 placed her fourth in her very talented heat at the NCAA West Preliminaries, but landed her seventh overall and was the fastest time ran by an athlete who didn't automatically qualify with a top three finish. Myers' attention now turns to the semifinal and final rounds of the race, set for June 8 and June 10, respectively, at Historic Hayward Field.
Senior Fiyin Olusola snagged the third and final qualifying spot in her heat of the 100m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 13.46. Overall, the hurdler's time put her 19th in the first round. She'll look to improve by at least seven spots Saturday at 5:05 p.m. PT in the quarterfinals, where a top 12 finish will earn her a trip to finals.
Senior Nicole Wadden, who has already punched her ticket to Eugene and the NCAA Finals in the heptathlon, finished in a tie for 18th in the high jump. She cleared 5 feet and 8.5 inches (1.74m) on her second attempt but couldn't get over the next height of 5 feet and 10.5 inches (1.79m). Wadden had just one attempt too many to miss getting into the eventual jump off in the event.
Action at the preliminary round wraps up tomorrow, including junior Brittany Graves in the triple jump at 4 p.m. PT and Olusola's quarterfinal race.
