SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Nevada (9-25) lost a nonconference game 10-3 at UC Santa Barbara (13-17) on Tuesday afternoon at Caesar Uyeska Stadium. With the loss the Wolf Pack is 9-25 while the Gauchos improved to 13-17.
The Pack hosts SanJosé State at Peccole Park this week for a three-game Mountain West series. Times for Thursday and Friday games have been changed to a 2 p.m. first pitch. With the forecast of cooler temperatures in the evening and rain the times were adjusted. Saturday's game will start as scheduled at 1 p.m. An egg hunt will be held prior to Saturday's game on the infield at Peccole.
Nevada jumped to an early 1-0 lead at UCSB on a sacrifice fly from first baseman Grant Fennell in the top of the first inning. The lead did not last long as the Gauchos scored three runs in the bottom of the inning and would not trail in the game.
Fennell's single in the third closed the gap to 3-2 but UCSB scored seven unanswered runs to take a commanding 10-2 advantage. The Pack added a single run in the top of the ninth inning after second baseman Keaton Smith doubled and scored on a Dillan Shrum single to make the final score 10-3.
Freshman Cole Henderson (0-4) allowed six runs, five earned in three innings and was tagged with the loss. Ben Brecht (2-2) earned the victory tossing 6.1 innings and surrendered two runs, one earned.
Smith (2-for-4,2R) led the Pack with two hits and Fennell drove home two on the day.
Armani Smith (3-for-4,3R,RBI) topped UCSB with three hits, scored three times and had one RBI. Four Gauchos hitters collected multiple hits in the win.
