FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Nevada baseball team (3-7, 1-1 MW) earned its first Mountain West victory of the season downing Fresno State (5-5, 1-1 MW) 10-8 at Pete Bieden Field tonight. The Wolf Pack and Bulldogs have split the first two games of the series with first pitch on Sunday set for 2:05 p.m. The game was pushed back an hour to allow for field preparation as rain is forecast for the area overnight and in the morning.
The scoring started early for Nevada when both Cole Krzmarzick and Kaleb Foster were able to record RBI singles in the first inning to put the Pack up 2-0. Justin Bridgman was the first to cross home plate for Nevada. An Aaron Arruda RBI single cut Nevada's lead to 2-1 after an inning of play.
FS scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to move in front 3-2. The Pack responded with a five-run top of the fifth that was highlighted by freshman second baseman Jaylon McLaughlin's first collegiate home run that scored three and put Nevada on top to stay.
With the Pack holding a slim one-run lead 8-7 in the top of the eighth, third baseman Jordan Pearce delivered a two-RBI single to push the advantage to 10-8. FS added a single run in the ninth but it not be enough as the Pack held on for the 10-8 victory.
Junior Pack starter Mark Nowaczewski (1-0) earned his first win of the season tossing 5.2 innings and allowed six runs, four earned. Senior Evan McMahan pitched two innings to earn his first save of the season. Rickey Ramirez (1-2) suffered the loss giving up seven runs, six earned in his five innings of action.
Bridgman (3-for-6,2R) collected three hits and scored a pair of runs. Krzmarzick (2-for-5,R,RBI) and McLaughlin (2-for-2,R,3RBI,3BB) each had two hits on the night. McLaughlin drove in three with his home run and Pearce had two RBI in the win.
