RENO, Nev. - The Nevada baseball team surrendered four runs in the top of the ninth to lose a 7-5 contest to visiting Sacramento State Tuesday afternoon.
The Wolf Pack (4-12) trailed by one after the first half inning but plated four runs in the bottom of the first to take over the lead. After Jaylon McLaughlin drew a leadoff walk, junior Jordan Pearce launched his third homerun of the season over the right field wall, giving Nevada a 2-1 advantage. The next batter, Cole Krzmarzick, then poked a single to center and was driven in to score off the long ball hit by Mike Echavia, his third of the year. Nevada scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the first with no outs.
The Hornets (9-6) trimmed the lead to one in the top of the fifth, plating two runs. With a runner on, back-to-back doubles cut the lead to 4-3 for Nevada. The top of the fifth was the final inning of work for Pack starting pitcher Ryan Anderson as he exited after five innings, surrendering the three runs and striking out four.
The game was quiet offensively for a few innings as sophomore pitcher Cooper Powell entered in the sixth and shut down the Hornets' offense. Powell tossed three innings of work and retired all nine batters he faced with one strikeout. Nevada plated its fifth and final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Pearce knocked in his third RBI of the game with a single up the middle, scoring Kaleb Foster.
With the Pack up by two runs entering the top of the ninth, senior Evan McMahan came into the game looking for the save. Sacramento State began the frame with back-to-back singles and plated one of those thanks to an RBI double that snuck inside the first base line. The game-tying run was scored via the next batter on a fielder's choice to the shortstop, scoring the runner from third. Another single and a second double of the inning scored the last two runs for the Hornets, giving them a 7-5 advantage.
Nevada scored five runs on eight hits on Tuesday. Pearce led the Wolf Pack going 3-for-4 on the day with a home run, three RBI and a run scored.
Nevada will play one more at Peccole Park on Wednesday against Utah before it heads to San Jose State for a three-game series this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
