RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada baseball team (3-10, 1-3 MW) lost its Mountain West series opener to San Diego State (9-5, 1-0 MW) 7-2 on Friday afternoon at Peccole Park. The Wolf Pack will take on the Aztecs on Saturday and Sunday to try to win the series.
The Aztecs got the scoring started early, plating three runs in the first two innings to take an early 3-0 lead over the Wolf Pack. Two of those RBIs came from the bat of Alan Trejo, who batted 3-5 on the day.
The Wolf Pack clawed its way back into the game, scoring runs in the third and seventh frames. Kaleb Foster batted in Nevada's first run with an RBI single, and Chase Grant was able to score Grant Fennell on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Ty Pennington would come in to pitch the eighth inning for Nevada, where the Aztec's offense came back to life. A two-run home run by Jordan Verdon and a solo shot by Andrew Martinez gave San Diego State a 6-2 lead, and ended the frame increasing their lead to 7-2. Nevada would be held scoreless the rest of the game.
Trevor Charpie suffered the loss, falling to 0-3 after pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. Brett Seeburger would move to 3-0 on the season after getting the win, allowing only two earned runs on five hits. Jorge Fernandez earned his first save of the season for the Aztecs.
Grant Fennell went 2-4 and scored one of the Wolf Pack's two runs. San Diego State hit .361 and went 4-9 with runners in scoring position.
