RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada Baseball team (1-4) lost to Virginia Tech (5-0) in the first game of their home-opening doubleheader. The Wolf Pack is playing the Hokies again later today.
Trevor Charpie pitched the first six innings for the Wolf Pack, giving up five earned runs and 10 hits with five strikeouts. Freshman Marco Valenzuela scored the first run of the game for Nevada after getting on base with a triple in his first ever at-bat at Peccole. The Hokies had a big fifth inning against Charpie, breaking the 2-2 tie by plating three two-out runs.
The Hokies built their lead all the way up to six with an 8-2 advantage over the Wolf Pack in the bottom of the ninth. Nevada was able to put their rally caps on, scoring five runs including a Grant Fennell two RBI double. Nevada trailed 8-7 with two outs and runners on second and third, but Justin Bridgman could not drive in the winning run and Virginia Tech ended the first game victorious.
