Nevada sets two school records in loss to No. 4 Alaska

4679 aggregate and 2368 air rifle are new school records

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada (5-2) rifle team set two school records in a 4695-4679 Patriot Rifle Conference loss to No. 4 Alaska on Sunday.  Nevada's next action is a rematch with Alaska in Fairbanks on Jan. 27.
 
The Wolf Pack set school records with its aggregate team score of 4695 and smallbore score of 2311.  In the Pack's previous match at Army the team set the smallbore school record posting a score of 2326 in West Point, N.Y.
 
The Nanooks won today's smallbore 2324-2311 to get the match started.  Nevada had four shooters in the top 10 led by sophomore Rachel Benesh's 581 that earned her second.  Mitchell Van Patten (579), Emily Capaul (576), Justin Nissen (575) and Eli Larimer (567) took spots four, six, eight and 10 respectively.  Alaska's Sagen Maddalena won with a score of 590.
 
In the air rifle event Alaska won by three points 2371-2368.  Capaul shot a season best score of 594 to place second.  The 594 is tied with Benesh for the top score of the season on the team.  Larimer set a personal best with his 592 that was good for fourth today.  Van Patten took fifth with a 591 and Sarah Jameson placed sixth also with a 591 but lost the tiebreaker to her teammate.  It was the first action of the season for Jameson who had been sidelined with a shoulder injury.  Benesh's 585 was 10th.  Maddalena's 599 won the air rifle.
 
In the aggregate score that combines the two events, Alaska's Maddalena (1189) and JT Schnering (1171) had the top two scores.  Capaul's career-high 1170 earned her third.  Van Patten was fourth also with an 1170.  Benesh placed sixth with her score of 1166.  Nissen (1160) and Larimer (1159) were eighth and ninth.
