Pack falls in road finale at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) - Rashaad Penny had a San Diego State-record 429 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns to help San Diego State beat Nevada 42-23 on Saturday night.

Penny finished with 24 carries for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns, 201 yards and two scores on three returns (two kickoff and one punt) and added one reception for six yards.

After Ty Gangi hit Brendan O'Leary-Orange for a 48-yard touchdown to give Nevada (2-9, 2-5 Mountain West) a 10-0 lead, Penny scored on a 23-yard run. The Wolf Pack then went three-and-out and Penny returned the ensuing punt 70 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-10 late in the first quarter. It was the first time Penny lined up as the punt returner in his career.

O'Leary-Orange's 7-yard TD catch put Nevada back in front early in the second, but Christian Chapman hit Mikah Holder for a 5-yard touchdown just before halftime and Juwan Washington's 1-yard scoring run gave San Diego State (9-2, 5-2) a 28-17 lead early in the third quarter. Gangi capped a 12-play, 89-yard drive with a 2-yard pass to O'Leary-Orange, but Penny took the kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and added a 67-yard TD run in the fourth.

Gangi was 33-of-54 passing for 414 yards for the Wolf Pack. O'Leary-Orange had 11 receptions for 213 yards and three touchdowns -- all career highs. It was the most receiving yards by a Nevada player since Trevor Insley had 212 against Oregon in 1999.

Postgame notes
-Sophomore WR Brendan O'Leary-Orange went over 100 receiving yards on just his first two receptions of the game, the second of which went for his second TD catch of the year. It was his second game of over 100 receiving yards this season (the other at Colorado State). His 214 receiving yards and 11 receptions set new career highs.
-Brendan O'Leary-Orange's 214 receiving yards are the 18th-most in a single game in program history and are the most since Trevor Insley had 212 against Oregon in 1999.
-Brendan O'Leary-Orange produced the first multi-TD game of his career with three TD receptions.
-Junior QB Ty Gangi's pass to senior WR Wyatt Demps in the second quarter that went for 82 yards is a career high for both and a season-long pass play. It was the longest pass play for Nevada since Tyler Lantrip hit Rashard Matthews for 90 yards vs. UNLV in 2011.
-The Wolf Pack's first touchdown of the game was scored after a turnover by the Aztecs' offense. It was just the second time this season an opponent had scored following a turnover.
-Junior CB Elijah Moody's forced fumble in the first quarter was the third force of his career and second of the season. Junior safety Dameon Baber recovered the fumble, the fourth of his career and first of the season.
-The 70-yard punt returned for a TD given up by Nevada in the first quarter was the first punt returned for a TD against Nevada since 2011 against Southern Mississippi.
-Senior WR Wyatt Demps extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 23 games.
-Junior WR Andrew Celis established a new career high with six receptions in the game.
-SDSU's Rashaad Penny's 100-yard kickoff return for a TD is the first kickoff returned for a TD allowed by Nevada since 2015 against Utah State.
-Junior QB Ty Gangi's 33 completions and 54 pass attempts are new career highs. He threw for over 400 yards for the second time this season.
-Nevada scored first for the third time this season after Spencer Pettit's 23-yard field goal opened the scoring.
-True freshman DT Chris Green got the first start of his college career.
-The team captains for today's game were senior OL Austin Corbett, senior WR Wyatt Demps and junior DB Dameon Baber and sophomore PK Spencer Pettit.
