RENO, Nev. – After a pair of road wins over nationally ranked Air Force and Army the University of Nevada (5-1) rifle team returns home to host No. 4 Alaska in a battle of two top 10 teams in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll. The Wolf Pack is currently seventh, their highest ranking of the season. The match is also a Patriot Rifle Conference event.
"Alaska is one of the most successful NCAA Rifle teams ever," Nevada head coach
Fred Harvey said. "They have won more championships than any other team aside from West Virginia. They have participated in every NCAA Championship over the past 20 years and never missed the top 10 in that
period. They are a legacy team and we look forward to shooting with them."
The smallbore will be contested on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the range located north of Peccole Park, Nevada's baseball field on the east side of campus. Air rifle will take place starting at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the Pack rifle range located on the second floor in the Nevada Genomics Center at 910 Valley Road.
The Pack's lineup has remained the same this season with three upperclassmen in Emily Capaul, Justin Nissen and Mitchell Van Patten. Sophomores Rachel Benesh and Eli Larimer complete the top five.
Van Patten has the Pack's top scores in smallbore (585) and aggregate (1176) that combines the two scores while his 593 in air rifle ranks second.
The sophomore Benesh is having and outstanding second season with her 594 in air rifle topping the team. Her 585 in smallbore and 1173 aggregate score are second.
Nissen is having his best season in his senior year with all three of his scores; air rifle (591), smallbore (583) and aggregate (1171) ranking third on the team.
The second senior, Capaul is fourth on the squad with a 578 in small bore as is her 1171 aggregate. Her 590 in air rifle is fifth.
Larimer's 591 in air rifle is tied for third, 578 in smallbore is fifth and 1165 aggregate is tied for fourth.
