USAFA, Colo. – In the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll, the University of Nevada and Air Force were tied for seventh. On Saturday the two closely matched Patriot Rifle Conference teams squared off at the Falcon Rifle Range. The Wolf Pack escaped with a five-point victory 4646-4641to improve to 4-1 overall and in the PRC.
Nevada takes a break before traveling to Army on Nov. 10.
The Pack won the smallbore by just two points, 2298-2296 on Saturday. The Falcons had the top two scores in the event 578 by Nate Peterson and 576 by Anna Weilbacher. The Pack posted the next four scores;
Justin Nissen (576),
Mitchell Van Patten (575),
Rachel Benesh (574) and Emily Capual (573).
Nevada had four of the top eight scores in air rifle to win by a slim three-point margin, 2348-2345. The Falcon's Weilbacher and the Pack's Capaul both shot 590 but the tiebreaker went to the AFA shooter. The 590 was a season-best for Capaul. Van Patten and Benesh both shot 588 but Van Patten held the tirebreaker to take fourth. Larimer posted a 582 to take eight.
In the aggregate that combines the two events, Capaul (1163), Van Patten (1163) and Benesh (1162) took spots two, three and four. Larimer (1152) was eighth and Nissen (1149) rounded out the top 10.
