COLUMBUS, Ohio – The ninth ranked University of Nevada (3-1) rifle team lost for the first time this season 4692-4662 at No. 8 Ohio State at the Buckeye Open on Saturday. The Wolf Pack defeated the Buckeyes earlier this season at home but were unable to duplicate the win on the road.
Nevada returns to action next weekend at Air Force in a Patriot Rifle Conference matchup in Colorado Springs, Colo.
OSU had the top three shooters in smallbore to win 2327-2304. Nevada sophomore
Rachel Benesh and senior
Emily Capaul shot 579 and 578 respectively to finish fourth and fifth respectively. Capaul's 578 was her top mark of the season.
OSU had five of the top six scores in air rifle to take the event 2365-2358.
Pack junior
Mitchell Van Patten shot a season best 593 in air rifle but was edged by OSU's Jacob Buchanan on the tiebreaker and finished second. Sophomore
Eli Larimer posted a 590 which placed him seventh.
In the aggregate, which combines the two events, Benesh and Van Patten both record scores of 1167. Benesh won the tiebreaker to place fifth. Capaul was ninth with an 1165 that tied her season high.
