RENO, Nev. - The 13th ranked University of Nevada rifle team dropped a close Patriot Rifle Conference to No. 5 Ohio State at home this weekend, 4668-4661. The Wolf Pack's 4661 is the best score to start a season in 23 years according to head coach Fred Harvey.
"The air rifle match was one of the best ever shot at Nevada and one of the best in the nation this weekend," Harvey said. "Every shooter broke 580 and I have never seen this in the past 23 years of shooting."
In Saturday's smallbore the Buckeyes shot 2309 while the Pack posted a score of 2303. Sophomore Mitchell Van Patten's 585 won the event while junior Sarah Jameson was second with a 580. Van Patten tied his top score from last season. Junior Justin Nissen and freshman Eli Larimer both shot 569.
All eight Pack shooters posted scores over 580 and nine of the 10 competitors in Sunday's air rifle surpassed 580. OSU edged Nevada by one point, 2359-2358 in air rifle.
Pack freshman Rachel Benesh won the air rifle with a score of 593. OSU took the next three spots as three Buckeye shooters posted scores of 590 or better. Van Patten and Emily Capaul tied for fifth with scores of 589. Jameson and Larimer each shot 587 while Nissen and Maneva Gill posted scores of 584.
Nevada hosts another PRC match next week when UTEP travels to Reno for competition on Saturday.
