RENO, Nev. - Three student-athletes on the University of Nevada baseball team were selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft on Saturday. Junior Miles Mastrobuoni, junior Trenton Brooks and senior Sam Held each were drafted.
Mastrobuoni was selected in the 14th round by the Tampa Bay Rays. A second basemen from Livermore, Calif., Mastrobuoni shined in his first season at Nevada after transferring from the College of San Mateo. Mastrobuoni earned second team All-Mountain West honors and batted .364 with 83 hits, 51 runs and 40 RBI.
A two-way player out of Alpine, Calif., Brooks was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 17th round. Brooks tallied 62 hits, 39 runs and 42 RBI and also boasted a 6-5 record on the mound to lead the team in wins. Brooks - who won the MW Tony Gwynn Player of the Year Award in 2015 - has played in 164 career games at Nevada with a .322 batting average.
Held was drafted in the 29th round by the Washington Nationals. A 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher, Held played two seasons at Nevada after transferring from Delta College. The Stockton, Calif., native posted a 6-0 record and made 33 appearances in his Pack career. Held tallied a 2-0 record and a 5.17 ERA in 19 appearances and four starts this season.
