ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nevada baseball team advanced to its first Mountain West Championship finals game in program history before falling short, concluding a banner season with an impressive postseason run. The Wolf Pack fell to second-seeded hosts New Mexico, 14-4, on Saturday evening at Santa Ana Star Field in the championship game.
Head coach T.J. Bruce and the Wolf Pack close the season with a 37-24 record. Nevada won four MW tournament games - its most in program history - and advanced to the finals for the first time. The Wolf Pack's 37 wins are tied for the eighth most in program history. Nevada closed the season with an incredible 20-4 record in its final 24 games, which included MW tournament victories against top-seeded Fresno State and Air Force, and two wins against San Diego State.
The Pack opened its stellar tournament run with a 15-3 victory over the Aztecs on Wednesday. Nevada dropped the bottom side of the bracket with a loss on Thursday before battling back with three straight elimination game victories against SDSU (5-3), Fresno State (25-6) and Air Force (12-1). In six tournament games, Nevada scored 59 runs and tallied 87 hits, which set a MW tournament all-time record.
Junior shortstop Justin Bridgman, sophomore outfielder TJ Friedl, sophomore first baseman Jordan Pearce and junior RHP Ty Pennington were named to the MW All-Tournament team.
In the championship game, Nevada scored four runs on 12 hits. Bridgman and Friedl each went 2-of-4 with one run and one RBI, while junior Trenton Brooks, senior Justin Hazard and sophomore Cole Krzmarzick each added two hits. Junior RHP Evan McMahan started and logged 4.0 innings, while Nevada used five pitchers in the loss.
Nevada struck first with one run in the opening inning after loading the bases on one out. Krzmarzick singled through the right side to drive in the game's first run. UNM opened a 3-1 lead in the third inning on a three-run home run.
The Wolf Pack rallied back in front in the top of the fourth inning with three runs on four hits to lead, 4-3. With two outs and two runners on base, Friedl hit an RBI single to pull Nevada within one run. Bridgman then plated two runs with an RBI single to left field as the Pack took the lead
Playing for the sixth time in four days, Nevada ran out of steam as the Lobos scored the game's final 11 runs and hit four home runs on the day to clinch the victory after seven innings.
Nevada tallied 37 wins on the season and went 20-10 in conference play during the regular season to finish tied for second despite being voted sixth in the preseason MW poll. Nevada caught fire late in the year and went on to advance to the MW tournament finals for the first time in program history.
All these accomplishments add up to a season to be proud of for Nevada, as first-year head coach T.J. Bruce and the Wolf Pack continued a proud program tradition and laid a foundation for further future success.
