Day One Results

CLOVIS, Calif. - Juniors Nicole Wadden and Katelin Westerterp got things started for Nevada Wednesday evening at the 2016 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Wadden and Westerterp competed in the first leg of the women's heptathlon, which will conclude with the final three events on Thursday. Wadden is looking to sweep this year's conference multi events as she took home gold in the pentathlon back in February at the indoor championships. She enters Thursday in second place with 3,272 points, which is a day one personal best. She trails Jessica Green of Colorado State by just 75 points.

Hoping to capture that sweep Wadden got off to a very solid start, taking the top spot in the day's first event, the 100m hurdles. She crossed the line with a PR of 14.04 seconds, besting New Mexico's Samantha Bowe by .04 seconds and establishing the eighth fastest time in Nevada history. Wadden followed that up with a runner-up showing in the day's second event, the high jump. She cleared 5'7" (1.70m) to claim the second spot.

Moving onto the night's third event, the shot put, Wadden came up with a huge PR throw of 37'4" (11.38m) to stake fourth place. Wadden improved her throw by over four feet from last year's outdoor championships. The finale of the evening, the 200m, Wadden clocked in at 25.69, a season best.

For Westerterp, this is the first heptathlon she is competing in and she currently sits in 17th place with 2,199 points. She began her afternoon with a time of 16.51 in the 100m hurdles and cleared 4'7" (1.40m) in the high jump. In the shot put Westerterp posted a throw of 26'7.75" (8.12m) and finished her evening in the 200m with a time of 28.05 seconds.

Both Wadden and Westerterp will conclude the heptathlon tomorrow evening with the long jump, javelin and 800m run.
