RENO, Nev. - In a match that was moved to the Lakeridge indoor courts because of rain in the Reno area, the University of Nevada (8-7, 1-1 MW) women's tennis team had its seven-match win streak snapped, falling 4-2 to intrastate rival UNLV (20-1, 4-1 MW). The 53rd ranked Rebels improved to 20-1 on the season and 4-1 in the Mountain West while the Wolf Pack fell to 8-7 and 1-1 in conference play. The match is part of the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy.
The Pack won the #1 and #2 doubles matches to secure the team point. Junior Sheila Morales and sophomore Blaga Delic won for the seventh consecutive time downing the 66th ranked Intercollegiate Tennis Association doubles team of Carol Yang and Aiwen Zhu 6-1 on court 1. The Pack's #2 doubles team of Adriana Gergelyova and Claudia Herrero defeated Anna Bogoslavets and Cristina Moroi 6-4 in the #2 doubles match to clinch the point.
UNLV's Anna Bogoslavets tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gergelyova on court 3. Zhu put the Rebels ahead 2-1 with a three set victory 4-6, 6-0 and 6-0 over Morales in the #2 singles match. Morales had her 11-match win streak snapped.
Herrero won her eighth match in a row and 22nd of the season with a three set victory over Yang 6-1, 3-6 and 6-1 to tie the score at 2-2. Yang entered the match ranked 82nd by the ITA. The 22 wins ties Tracy King (1991-92) for the fifth most wins in a season at Nevada.
The Rebels' Paola Artiga downed Delic in the #4 singles match 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 and 6-2 to put UNLV on top to stay 3-2. Iren Kotseva clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sara Korzeniecki in #5 singles to make the final score 4-2.
