BERKELEY, Calif. - The Nevada Wolf Pack track & field team battled the elements on Saturday to get off to a great start to the outdoor season at the Cal Opener.

Nevada was able to claim three first place finishes and eight top three finishes. The Cal Opener, which typically serves as the first outdoor meet for Nevada was especially tough with constant rain and heavy winds picking up in the afternoon. In spite of that, many events went Nevada's way.

Leah Carter and Kinsey Minter took the top two spots in the high jump. After the rest of the field had dropped out, the two Nevada athletes were the only ones standing. Carter, with a jump of five feet and 5.75 inches, claimed second. Minter, after the two had requested to raise the bar to five feet and 9.25 inches, hit the mark on her second attempt, taking first and tying her personal record, which also sits at third on the Nevada all-time list.

Fiyin Olusola brought Nevada's second victory of the day in 100 meter hurdles. At the halfway mark, the junior pulled way ahead of the Pack, crossing the line with a time of 13.81 seconds. Her time was almost a full .4 seconds ahead of second place.

The Javelin throw proved to be another strong point for the Pack, as Nevada's four throwers all fell in the top six. Throwing into the wind, senior Raffaela Wiesbeck took the top spot, throwing for a mark of 145 feet and 11 inches. Rounding out the top three in the event was sophomore Katia Coquis-Lossio, chucking the javelin 140 feet and nine inches. Right behind her in fourth was senior Alyssa Zunino at 136 feet and 11 inches, and Savanna Haverfield took sixth with a mark of 118 feet and 10 inches.

The wind really picked up heading into 100m dash. Sophomore Makeya White battled the entire stretch, coming just .03 short of first place in her heat. She took second overall, with a time of 11.75 seconds, which is good enough to bump her up a spot on the the all-time list up to fifth. Sophomore Alyssa Porter came in first in her heat with a time of 12.21 seconds, a time that put her in fourth place overall.

The rain continued to pound during the 400 meter hurdles. Sophomore Alexandra Tierney, who specializes in the event, found herself in third coming around the second and final turn. Leading into a great hurdle coming onto the stretch, Tierney moved into the second spot, where she would finish with a time of 1:03.62. Junior Katelin Westerterp joined Tierney in the race, and her time of 1:08.03 placed her in fourth.

In the 200m, White took third coming in at a time of 25.26 to claim her second top three finish of the day. Meanwhile over at the triple jump, sophomore Brittany Graves leaped her way to second with a best jump of 38 feet and seven inches.

Due to travel concerns, the Pack did not run the 4x400m relay, closing the Cal Opener for the Pack. The Pack will see action again next weekend when they travel to Davis, Calif.
