SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Under sunny skies and warm weather, the Nevada track & field team put together several strong performances at the Hornet Invite Saturday.
Nevada amassed a total of four top three finishes in a crowded field that included Mountain West foe San Jose State as well as Pac-12 schools Cal and Stanford. Freshman Brandi French debuted on the school's all-time list at seventh with her mark in the shot put, while sophomore Anna DuBois moved up to eighth. Sophomore Katia Coquis-Lossio also earned herself a new personal record in the javelin throw.
Junior Nicole Wadden matched her personal record in the high jump at five feet and eight inches. The heptathlete found herself going one-on-one with the only competitor left in the field. Both competitors hit the five foot eight mark, but failed on the next step up. Overall, Wadden missed fewer attempts, placing her atop the field in first. Junior Leah Carter took fifth and senior Kinsey Minter snagged sixth.
Sophomore Brittany Graves grabbed the second victory for Nevada in the triple jump. Headed into the finals, Graves was seeded first in the competition. Even though she had to forfeit her final jump to go race a leg of the 4x400m relay, the Canada native held onto the top spot with a best mark of 38 feet and 9.75 inches, a season's best.
Junior Fiyin Olusola did what she does best in the 100 meter hurdles, logging a third place finish in a crowded field. Olusola's time of 13.76 was just under .2 seconds short of a new personal record. Wadden, who was competing in most of the events that compose the first day of a heptathlon, set a new personal record in the 100m hurdles, finishing with a time of 14.52 seconds.
Makeya White also placed third at the Hornet Invite. The sophomore, competing in the first heat of the 100m dash, crossed the finish line with a time of 11.91, a mere .05 seconds off her personal best. White currently sits at fifth on the Nevada all-time list. She also placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.92.
Over at the shot put ring, success found both Nevada athletes with French and DuBois. French, who actually debuted on the school's indoor list her first meet, did the same for outdoor season with her mark of 46 feet and nine inches. The freshman placed third and is now seventh on the school's all-time list. DuBois, who threw for 45 feet and 4.5 inches, took fifth at the competition and moved to eighth in the record book.
Top finishes once again came for the Pack's very strong javelin squad. Senior Raffaela Wiesbeck took second coming in at 153 feet and 3 inches. Close behind her in third was Coquis-Lossio, who started the event with a new personal record on her first (and best) throw of 149 and five inches. Senior Alyssa Zunino took fourth 141 feet and an inch, while junior Savanna Haverfield rounded at the group in sixth with a throw of 132 feet and four inches.
Nevada will take a weekend off, but then head to the UCLA Legends meet at the end of the month for their next competition.
