RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada (6-6) women's tennis team defeated Idaho (9-6) 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Caughlin Club to conclude a perfect 3-0 homestand. The Wolf Pack won its fifth consecutive match to even its overall record at 6-6. The Vandals fell to 9-6 on the season.
Nevada is off until March 31 when they play at UC San Diego followed by the Mountain West opener at San Diego State on Apr. 1.
Trailing 3-2 the Pack need wins on courts 1 and 2 to take the match. Sophomore Claudia Herrero dropped the first set to Idaho's Marianna Petrei 6-4 but rallied to win 7-5, 7-5 to even the score at three. Herrero led the third set 5-2 but dropped three consecutive games and the set was tied. She won the next two games including blanking her opponent in the final game to take match. The win was her 19th of the season and she is now 9-2 in duals.
Junior Sheila Morales also dropped the first set at #2 singles 7-6 but won the next two 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Pack 4-3. She improved to 14-4 on the season and is now 10-1 in duals.
Nevada took the #1 and #2 doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. Idaho won the first completed doubles match 6-0 on court three. Morales and Blaga Delic evened it up with a 6-1 victory at #1 doubles. Herrero and Adriana Gergelyova clinched the point with a 7-4 victory in the tiebreaker to take the #2 doubles match 7-6.
The Vandals moved in front 2-1 with straight set victories at #5 and #6 singles. Delic won her #3 singles match 7-5, 6-3 over Idaho's Maria Tavares and the score was tied 2-2.
Idaho got within a point of winning the match when Celine Kotes defeated Gergelyova 1-6, 6-3 and 6-3 in the #4 singles match. The Pack would prevail winning on courts #1 and #2 to take the match 4-3.
