LAS VEGAS - Freshman pitcher Brooke Bolinger struck out a career high seven batters in a complete game effort and senior Megan Sweet hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the sixth in the Nevada softball team's 4-2 victory over Portland State on Saturday at the DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
Sweet's third home run of the season was her 27th career round tripper, moving into second place in program history. Senior Hannah Harger added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with her first career home run for the Wolf Pack (6-2).
Freshman Kwynn Warner slapped a two-strike pitch through the left side in the top of the first for the first Wolf Pack baserunner of the day and moved to second on a passed ball. After Martinez junior Raquel Martinez walked, Portland State retired the Pack in order to end the threat.
Nevada got on the board in the top of the second on a solo home run from senior Amanda Weis. Weis' second round tripper of the season moved her into sole possession of eighth place on Nevada's all-time home run chart.
After Bolinger struck out two in the third, the Vikings plated a run in the bottom of the fourh on a solo home run that knotted the game up at 1-1. Martinez sparked the Wolf Pack rally with a single up the middle to start the top of the sixth and set the stage for Sweet. The senior delivered with a home run on the first pitch she saw that put the Pack back on top, 3-1.
Leading off the top of seventh and pinch hitting was Harger who on a 2-2 count smacked a home run to left center that served as a needed insurance run for Bolinger. The freshman clamped down in the bottom half of the inning where she recorded the final two outs with the bases loaded.
Nevada will be back in action tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Robert Morris before taking on Southern Utah at 11:15.
