LAS VEGAS - Sophomore Jonathan Aremon and freshman Kostya Nesterenko survived the first day of the ITA Mountain Regional being played at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas. Eight Wolf Pack singles players started the day but just two remain in the draw of 128 while the other six will play in the consolation bracket on Thursday. Two Wolf Pack doubles teams won on Wednesday to remain in the winners bracket.
Aremon started his day with a straight sets victory 7-5, 7-5 over Northern Arizona's Adi Zilberstein. He was leading top seed Diogo Rocha of Denver 3-2 when an injury forced his opponent to retire and Aremon advanced. Thursday he plays Sergi Espias of New Mexico State.
In his first match on Wednesday Nesterenko knocked off Montana's Yannick Schmidt 6-4, 6-2. Next was another straight set victory 6-4, 6-2 over Luis Flores of New Mexico State.
Freshman Julien Evrard split two three set matches on the first day. Against Montana State's Rok Stitar he won 4-6, 6-1 and 6-2. Utah State's Kai Wehnelt knocked Evrard out of the draw with a 7-5, 6-7 and 6-4 three set win.
Junior Alex Turc needed three sets to knock off BYU's Jacob Sullivan 2-6; 6-4; 6-3 in his first match of the regional. Idaho State's Quentin Wacquez eliminated Turc 6-2, 6-3.
Senior Mile Cilic, junior Peter O'Donovan, sophomore Sandro Lena and junior Robert Margitfalvi all lost their first matches and will play in the consolation bracket on Thursday.
Two of the Pack's four doubles teams advanced on Wednesday. Margitfalvi and O'Donovan won 8-3 over Weber State's Kris Van Wyk and Cezary Walkusz. Thursday they face the top seeded team of Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen from New Mexico.
Evrard and Turc knocked off Alexander Flink and Rok Sitar of Montana State 8-2. Tomorrow they take on Utah State's duo of Jonas Maier and Jack Swindells who are seeded ninth.
Aremon and Nesterenko lost 8-2 to a team from Utah State. Cilic and Lena fell 8-5 to a squad from BYU.
